PARKS “PUTTS” ON A HAPPY FACE AT THE “HOLE-IN-ONE”

Commissioner Henry J. (StarQuest) Stern celebrated the Grand Opening of the Flushing Meadows Golf Center on Monday, September 18 by participating in a "Hole-in-One" Contest on the newly renovated green. The fresh new facility adds to the wealth of recreational opportunities available in Flushing Meadows, including the USTA National Tennis Center and the Queens Wildlife Center.

Following a renovation totaling nearly $1 million funded by the concessionaire, the Golf Center is up and running. The improved center now features a new miniature golf course, a new clubhouse, new lighting, new plantings, rehabilitated fairways and sand traps, and an upgraded irrigation system.

To celebrate the opening, golfers were invited to try their luck at sinking a "Hole-in-One" on the course's first hole from a distance of 80 yards. Winners were presented with a complete set of Calloway Big Bertha woods and irons. Runners-up who made it within a few years of the hole received smaller prizes of golf supplies.

RACE FOR THE CURE

On Sunday, September 17, the Road Runners Club sponsored the 10th Annual Race for the Cure, an event to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The 5 kilometer race was open to all women and those men who are breast cancer survivors. Attendees included Queen Borough President Claire (Queen Bee) Shulman, Congresswoman Carolyn Moloney, and Congresswoman Nita (Lioness) Lowey, all of whom turned out to support this effort to fund breast cancer screening, research, education, and treatment for underserved communities in the New York area.

KOREAN HARVEST IN QUEENS REAPS GREAT SUCCESS

More than 30,000 people came to the Sixth Annual Korean Harvest and Folklore Festival in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park last Sunday, held near the World's Fair Unisphere. The Festival commemorated Ch'usok, the ancient Korean Thanksgiving Day and featured a cornucopia of traditional food, dance and merriment.

Opening the festival was the Ancestor Worship Ceremony, in which thanks are given for this year's harvest. The popular Farmer's Dance, led by Korean farmers wearing sashes and brilliant headdresses, followed. The dance, traditionally performed by farmers travelling from village to village, is a celebration of the seasons.

Membership Extension



During the summer, we have had to temporarily reduce operating hours at several of our indoor pools. We understand the impact this has had on our members, and we want to ensure that our members have as much pool time and access as possible.



That said, we are offering qualifying individuals the opportunity to extend their membership by three months for free. To be eligible to receive the extension, you must meet all three qualification criteria:



          
  • Have obtained your membership prior to June 26, 2025, and were an active member on that date.


    •       
  • Be a paying member who possesses either an adult indoor pool membership or a senior, people with disabilities, or veteran membership.


    •       
  • Have visited a qualifying indoor pool site between January 1, 2025 to June 26, 2025.

Tide Gate Bridge Construction



Due to construction on the Tide Gate Bridge, located on Meridian Road within Flushing Meadows Corona Park, vehicular traffic will not be allowed to cross the bridge in either direction. Please follow posted detour signs around Meridian Road and plan for additional travel time. Pedestrian traffic will still be permitted to cross the bridge.
