Artwork History
New York-based artist Matt Mullican (b. 1951) created this granite panel on which is etched the history of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park’s development, from prehistoric times through the World’s Fairs of 1939-40 and 1964-65. The 3,000-square-foot tableau consists of 464 four foot by four foot etched blocks that tell a hieroglyphic-like story of the park site, including the technological advances showcased in both World’s Fairs. The piece was installed in 1995 as part of Phase I of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park’s CORE area renovation around the Unisphere.
Mullican is known for his pictograph style, which he began to develop in the late 1970s after visiting Nova Scotia and noticing the ubiquitous informational graphic signs in the airport. He was active in the New York art world during the early 1980s, doing performance art pieces. His work can also be seen in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum. The installation of this piece was sponsored by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art program in conjunction with Parks and the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Corporation.

Know Before You Go
From Monday, August 18 through Sunday, September 7, parking will be prohibited under the Van Wyck Expressway and in Parking Lot D due to the US Open. We encourage all Aquatics Center members and visitors to use public transportation when traveling to the center during this time.
Membership Extension
During the summer, we have had to temporarily reduce operating hours at several of our indoor pools. We understand the impact this has had on our members, and we want to ensure that our members have as much pool time and access as possible.
That said, we are offering qualifying individuals the opportunity to extend their membership by three months for free. To be eligible to receive the extension, you must meet all three qualification criteria:
- Have obtained your membership prior to June 26, 2025, and were an active member on that date.
- Be a paying member who possesses either an adult indoor pool membership or a senior, people with disabilities, or veteran membership.
- Have visited a qualifying indoor pool site between January 1, 2025 to June 26, 2025.

If you believe you meet these qualifications, you may submit a request by completing the online form. The deadline to opt-in for the extension is November 16, 2025.
Due to construction on the Tide Gate Bridge, located on Meridian Road within Flushing Meadows Corona Park, vehicular traffic will not be allowed to cross the bridge in either direction.
