Hybrid Oak Woods Park details

This site is not generally accessible to the public.

Hybrid Oak Woods is a 9.7-acre park in Staten Island that supports a mosaic of freshwater wetlands, streams, and ponds. The park is characterized by the presence of willow oak (Quercus phellos), blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica), dwarf chestnut oak (Quercus prinoides), in addition to the more common oaks of lower New York State: red oak (Quercus rubra), black oak (Quercus velutina), scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea), and pin oak (Quercus palustris).

These woodlands have been called "Hybrid Oak Woods" in recognition of the occurrence of Quercus x brittonii, Quercus. x bushii, Quercus. x rudkinii and Quercus. x heterophylla. All these oaks persist here despite a severe fire in 1963.
