Shucked Stories: Brooklyn’s Black Oysterers

Discover the often-overlooked history of oystering within Brooklyn’s Black community at this special program, featuring a live oystering demonstration using an authentic oystering cart from the Real Mother Shuckers, alongside a small exhibition of 19th-century oystering tools and artifacts. Presented in partnership with Hendrick I. Lott House, the program also highlights the Lott family’s role in Brooklyn’s historic oyster trade, honoring the labor, skill, and cultural legacy of Black oysterers who shaped the borough’s waterfront history.
