Siedenburg Park natural area

Siedenburg Park is a 22.9-acre park surrounded by development. It contains a wide variety of habitats including upland forests, freshwater wetlands, and ponds. White (Quercus alba) and black oaks (Quercus velutina) and hickories (Carya spp.) are scattered throughout the canopy, which shades a lush ground cover containing several species of ferns, including cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum), interrupted fern (Osmunda claytoniana), royal fern (Osmunda regalis), and more. Most notably, the park provides habitat for one of the last strongholds of pink lady slipper orchids (Cypripedium acaule) in New York City, where it is protected by an exclosure to prevent it from being eaten by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
