Trees Count

Every ten years, we take stock of every public tree across the five boroughs and 2025 is our most ambitious tree census yet. Just like the U.S. Census helps us understand people, this count helps us understand and care for the trees that make our city livable, resilient, and beautiful.

And this time, we’re doing it with more partners, more tech, and more New Yorkers than ever before.

What is Trees Count?

Since 1995, NYC Parks has conducted a citywide tree inventory once a decade. In each survey, we record:

  • Where trees are
  • What species they are
  • How big they are
  • How healthy they are

We’re counting both park trees and street trees at the same time — creating the most complete picture of NYC’s urban forest in history.

Why We Count Trees?

Our urban forest is alive — and growing. The census equips us with information vital for its well-being and care.

These inventories help us:

  • See how our urban forest is changing over time
  • Make smart, data-driven decisions about planting and care
  • Bring more trees to neighborhoods that need shade, cooling, and cleaner air
  • Strengthen our city against heat, flooding, and pollution
  • Support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems
  • Invite New Yorkers to connect with nature — right outside their doors

Once you participate in a survey, you start to notice every tree — and that changes how you see the city.

Year 1 Highlights - Summer - Fall 2025

We kicked off Trees Count this summer — and New Yorkers showed up in full force!

Together, we:

  • Surveyed 46,000+ park trees
  • Collected data in 434 parks — 27.4% of all parks citywide
  • Worked alongside 2,500+ volunteers
  • Held 134 volunteer events across all five boroughs

Thousands of people learned, gathered, and cared for the city — one tree at a time.

And this is just the beginning.

What's Next - Year 2

Street Trees

This time, we’re doing something completely new.

To count every street tree in New York City, Parks is using LiDAR scanners mounted on cars to create 3D models of every tree — what we call “digital twins.” Then, with machine learning, we can tell a tree’s size, species, condition, and location in incredible detail.
