A $3.79 million capital project added new play equipment, basketball courts, and other amenities, while improving the site’s safety and accessibility

NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessenia Aponte was joined yesterday by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, City Councilmember Althea Stevens, State Assemblymember Landon C. Dais, and community members to celebrate the reconstruction of Goble Playground in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx.

“The revamped Goble Playground provides the Mount Eden community with a state-of-the-art recreational space that’s more inviting, accessible, and resilient,” said NYC Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessenia Aponte. “We’re confident that park users will enjoy the upgraded basketball amenities, along with the new play space created for older children and other significant changes throughout the park. This project emphasizes our commitment to improving our park spaces in communities that need it the most, and we’re grateful to the City Council for making it possible.”

Parks recently completed a $3.79 million capital project to completely reconstruct the playground, adding new play equipment and swings, as well as a new spray shower. The play area was expanded to include new equipment designed for children ages 5 to 12, which is designed in the shape of a rocket ship. The playground’s popular full-size basketball court was renovated, with a new half basketball court created to alleviate high demand for the larger court. A reconfigured handball court was also added, and a small seating area with painted games was constructed along the southern edge of the playground.

The project also revamped the playground’s main entrance, creating a wide ramp to provide universal access for all park users. Excessive perimeter fencing was reduced to make the playground more inviting to visitors. In addition, the project upgraded the site’s drainage and water supply systems, installed new security light poles, and added new trees to provide shade to park users.

The project was funded by the New York City Council.

The reconstruction of Goble Playground was completed under Stronger Parks, Safer Communities, an NYC Parks initiative to enhance recreational assets and greenspaces in communities that are disproportionally affected by gun violence. Part of the Vital Parks for All plan announced last year, Stronger Parks, Safer Communities includes more than $400 million in investments for communities serving residents from six precinct neighborhoods prioritized by the Mayor's Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Upstream investments in community facilities and greenspaces that activate parks, foster social connections, and strengthen community fabric can help deter violence and improve public safety.
