Backporch History 2025: "The Amazing Story of the Dyckman Farmhouse" with Don Rice

Wednesday, July 16, 2025

6:00 p.m.7:00 p.m.

What’s the most historic thing in Inwood? For many, the DYCKMAN FARMHOUSE would be at the top of the list. It’s not only a national landmark, it’s one of the oldest structures in Manhattan. The name Dyckman appears all over the neighborhood - on streets, schools, shops, subway stations, ballfields, basketball tournaments. What is its story? When was it built, who lived there, and why is it still around?

On July 16th from 6pm-7pm, DFMA trustee Don Rice will present The Amazing Story of the Dyckman Farmhouse, a recently researched tour-de-force that pulls together everything we know about this fascinating and historic structure. Using primary documents and rarely-seen images and maps we’ll trace the history of Inwood’s oldest home, and even make a few guesses about its future.
