Hart Island Black History Month Tour (South Island)

Join the Urban Park Rangers on Hart Island to explore New York City’s Black History. Hear individuals’ stories from the Civil War, to the Roaring Twenties, to the modern day.

Participants are chosen by lottery.

Lottery registration opens on Wednesday February 4, 2026 and ends Thursday February 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

Please Note:
-You must register each member of your party for the lottery under the same account. Anyone who was not registered will not be permitted to attend.

- If you are selected for the program, you will receive a series of emails confirming your selection and must respond as soon as possible to avoid forfeiting your spot.

- Hart Island is only accessible via ferry. Selected participants will be provided details regarding program arrival and other specifics.

- There are no indoor facilities, restrooms or drinking fountains on Hart Island. There are portable restrooms on the island.

- This tour covers historical context of Hart Island and is about two hours of walking, some parts on uneven terrain. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the terrain.

- Program may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the discretion of ferry operations.
